Welcome to Arendis!

In the late 2380s, a Borg sphere was found crashed on a planet in the Eridan system in the Azure Nebula, bordering the Federation and what would later become the Romulan Republic. The independent Borg Research Institute launched an expedition to study the sphere with help from Starfleet. Eventually, Deep Space 17 was built in orbit of the planet, administered by Starfleet with support from the nascent Romulan Republic, and in the 2390s an aperture point granting access to the Borg transwarp network was discovered.

The U.S.S. Arendis is the first Starfleet vessel to explore the Borg transwarp network. A prototype refit of the Luna-class, Arendis is outfitted with technology developed by the Borg Research Institute to help the ship withstand the harsh conditions inside transwarp conduits that have thus far prevented Starfleet from conducting any meaningful exploration of the network, aside from short-range probe expeditions.

Under the command of Captain Simone Langford and based out of Deep Space 17, Arendis's goal will be to map this vast unexplored network and discover what became of the Borg Collective after it was crippled by the U.S.S. Voyager in 2378. With so many unknowns about the Borg still lingering, the crew may face one of the most dangerous missions Starfleet has undertaken in years, and one of the most historic.

» Roadmap for Arendis

Posted on Sat Jan 30th, 2021 @ 5:00pm by Captain Simone Langford in Sim Announcement

Greetings everyone!

With all the recent changes that have occurred as we get our new sim underway, I want to take a moment to lay out in more detail the setting and plan for our sim, which will hopefully help to clear up some confusion and answer some questions.

The State of the Federation:
Over the last 30 years, a lot has happened to the Federation that has contributed to the state in which it exists in 2399, our current sim year. Let's take a look back at some of the events which have played a major role.

In 2367, the Battle of Wolf 359 took place between Starfleet and the Borg. It was one of the most destructive battles in Federation history prior to the Dominion War, resulting in 39 Starfleet ships destroyed by a single Borg cube and with casualties numbering over 11,000. Another engagement with the Borg, the Battle of Sector 001 in 2373, saw the destruction of at least 20 Starfleet ships and thousands more dead.

While Starfleet was still grappling with Borg incursions, tensions with the Dominion from the Gamma Quadrant had escalated beyond repair and the Dominion War was well underway by 2373. By the end of the war in 2375, Starfleet alone had lost thousands of ships and hundreds of millions of people, civilian and military alike, had lost their lives. The war not only greatly affected the Federation, but also the Romulan Star Empire, the Klingon Empire and decimated the Cardassian Union.

In 2379, the Romulan government faced a coup from the Reman Liberation Movement during which the Romulan senate was assassinated and the head of state, the Praetor, deposed. Although the coup was thwarted with help from Starfleet, the empire devolved into civil war as a result and was unprepared for the revelation in the 2380s that their sun would go supernova by 2387.

By 2385, the Federation - still in the process of recovering from the Dominion war ten years earlier - was outfitting an armada of old mothballed ships and newly built transports to assist in the evacuation of several billion Romulan and Reman citizens. Then, in the midst of preparations, the Synth population went rogue which resulted in the Attack on Mars on April 5th, 2385.

Synths - synthetic non-sentient androids - comprised a large number of the workforce of many Federation construction facilities, including that of Utopia Planitia in orbit of Mars. When the Synths went rogue, they destroyed Utopia Planitia and the thousands of ships being refitted to help with the Romulan rescue effort. They also bombarded Mars, killing the entire population in an attack so intense that the Martian atmosphere is still on fire fourteen years later.

The Federation immediately banned the entire Synth workforce, an act that would set its shipbuilding and construction projects back decades. The rescue effort, already not popular with many Federation members, was cancelled. Many political factions opposed the move and vast numbers of experienced Starfleet personnel resigned in protest. Unfortunately, the majority of the Federation was persuaded it would not be in their best interest to help the Romulans. Many civilian efforts were made, however, to help in whatever way they could to help relocate Romulan citizens to worlds outside the radius of the supernova.

When the supernova finally occurred in 2387, the evacuation was only partly completed and billions died who were left behind. The Romulan Empire all but collapsed, with individual colonies left to fend for themselves as opposing factions began to fight for control over what was left of the empire. The remnants of the former government settled on Rator III and attempted to reform the Romulan state along with the remainder of the Romulan Navy. Eventually, in the 2390s, a new government calling itself the Romulan Free State arose from the ashes and slowly began to reincorporate former worlds back into the fold, although it was met with a lot of resistance from worlds who were glad to be rid of the authoritarian rule of the former Star Empire.

The Federation, in the wake of the supernova crisis, largely withdrew from interstellar cooperation, becoming a former shadow of itself. Many Starfleet installations along the borders were closed down as key Starfleet personnel were needed closer to core worlds. Starfleet, now a fraction of the size it was in the 2360s, struggled to maintain support for frontier colonies located hundreds of light years from the core worlds. Most colonies were left to fend for themselves, with only a handful of starbases and outposts remaining operational on the frontier.

By 2399, the Federation was only starting to recover from its accumulative losses, both materially and diplomatically. More ships were again being deployed to the frontier to reestablish contact with border colonies and minor interstellar states, and exploration was slowly gaining focus again. Diplomats faced an uphill battle, however, as many former allies of the Federation now felt that they had been abandoned.

The Setting of the Sim:
We start off the sim on the Intrepid-class U.S.S. Lyonesse NCC-78287, having just arrived at Starbase 234 after a three month exploration and reconnaissance mission of the mysterious Azure Nebula. The Lyonesse is one of a small number of ships operating in this area of space, dividing its missions between exploration, reconnaissance and maintaining diplomatic ties with border worlds and other minor states in the area.

Unlike many other starbases that were decommissioned, Starbase 234 remained operational due to its strategic location close to the nebula and its capability to warn in advance of a possible threat from both Klingon or Romulan space. The Azure Nebula itself lies at the intersection of Federation, Klingon and former Romulan space, forming a natural barrier between the three powers. Dense and filled with subspace anomalies, the nebula has often proven to be an ideal hiding place for friend and foe alike, as well as a staging ground for marauders and pirates.

Located on the Federation edge of the Azure Nebula is the Venteris Corporate Union, an independent state run by a megacorporation that controls a small handful of colonies. Established in the 22nd century by Risian and later Human colonists, the planet of Arendis serves as the homeworld of the Venteris Corporate Union. Since its foundation it has remained independent and neutral, protected by its proximity to the non-aggressive Federation and by the natural barrier of the Azure Nebula.

With immigration having largely driven its population growth, the population of Arendis numbers at 26 million by 2399 and is diverse demographically, consisting of various species found in and around the Federation. The planet is a popular tourist destination and investment location, and also serves as a trade hub for several independent worlds in the region and beyond.

In orbit of Arendis is Navara Station, which coordinates orbital defenses of the system and planet, as well as serving as an orbital trade complex and cargo facility. The station also contains luxury residences and diplomatic facilites, as well docking bays for small craft, and docking ports along the exterior for larger vessels.

The First Mission:

During our first mission, titled "Battle of Arendis", Arendis will come under attack from renegade Klingon forces. The Lyonesse will respond to the Venteris Union's call for assistance. The battle will destroy most of Arendis's defences, resulting in the Venteris government requesting the protection of Starfleet. While the Federation considers this request, we - as the crew of the Lyonesse - will be transferred to Navara Station in orbit of Arendis in order to help with repairs, defense and to facilitate the negotiations required for Venteris to become a Federation Protectorate.

Going forward, being based from Navara Station will allow a lot of different story opportunities. We're right on the edge of the enigmatic Azure Nebula, with a lot of potential for exploration. Arendis itself and the proximity of the Klingons and Romulans will make for intriguing political plotlines. As a trade hub, Arendis will also draw a lot interesting and curious characters with questionable backgrounds to it. For now though, we start off at Starbase 234 to introduce our characters before we get embroiled in the main action of the plot.

As always, if there are any questions, please feel free to contact me and ask away. I'll try my best to answer as informatively as I can. More information will be forthcoming as the plot progresses, including details about the Venteris Union, Arendis and Navara Station.

Your GM,
Bren
